The context

The data management process allows companies to solve complex problems of development, access, management and analysis of data by centralizing the common data function and managing master data. Through Data Management, companies can identify the features common to all systems and centralize control of the data, allowing users to benefit from an independent and comprehensive data management process, characterized by different styles and domains.

A Data Warehouse is a collection of static integrated data, organized by subject, covering a series of events that occur over time with regard to the recovery of information to support decision making. In a data warehouse, research operations are interactive and update operations affect millions of records.

The Data Warehouse represents all the data through a single model reconciling the heterogeneity of the different representations:

names
encoding
records' representation.

In a Data Warehouse the interest of time is wide, it covers the historical evolution of the information. Data warehouses are designed for OLAP, statistical functions with complex queries, multidimensional views, historical data.

ETL means extract, transform and load. ETL is a three-step process of using a database or data warehouse. ETL allows the integration and the analysis of different formats' data, stored in different databases. After being collected from different sources (extraction), the data is reformatted and "purified" for operational needs (transformation). Finally, the data is loaded into a target database, data warehouse or data mart to be analysed. Most of extraction and processing approaches allow the data loading into a final database. ETL tools can also be used to move data from one operating system to another.
